How recognising Somaliland can help India gain greater influence

The Republic of Somaliland, despite its lack of formal recognition, is often adoringly referred to as “Africa’s Best Kept Secret”, as a hat tip for being the sole democracy in the troubled Horn of Africa region. Straddling the strategic Gulf of Aden shipping lane, where democratic values are on the wane — it, unbeknownst to many, has quietly enjoyed five peaceful democratic transfers of power following hotly contested one-person, one-vote elections, and with minimal outside involvement to boot.
